The Alhambra in Granada is one of the most significant monuments of Islamic civilization on the Iberian Peninsula. As the seat of power of the Nasrid Dynasty (1232–1492), the complex displays not only outstanding architecture and aesthetics but also an advanced hydraulic engineering system. This paper examines the Alhambra as concrete evidence of the profound historical relationship between the Arab-Islamic world and Spain, focusing on the Acequia Real water infrastructure as the foundation of its existence. Amid current global geopolitical uncertainty, cooperation between the Kingdom of Spain and Arab countries in restoring and preserving this heritage is argued to be a strategic measure capable of easing tensions and strengthening inter-civilizational dialogue.

Como sede del poder de la dinastía nazarí (1232–1492), el complejo exhibe no solo una arquitectura y una estética sobresalientes, sino también un avanzado sistema de ingeniería hidráulica. Este trabajo examina la Alhambra como evidencia concreta de la profunda relación histórica entre el mundo árabe-islámico y España, centrándose en la infraestructura hídrica de la Acequia Real como fundamento de su existencia. يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُم مِّن ذَكَرٍ وَأُنثَىٰ وَجَعَلْنَاكُمْ شُعُوبًا وَقَبَائِلَ لِتَعَارَفُوا ۚ إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِندَ اللَّهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرٌ

“O mankind! Indeed, We created you from a male and a female and made you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.”

1. Introduction.

Arab-Islamic leaders possessing capability and resources have frequently directed their efforts toward enhancing local image and personal prestige. Historical legacies in Andalusia, including the Alhambra, have often been invoked merely as apologetic arguments—rhetorical self-defenses—without accompanying genuine commitment to preserve, research, or revitalize this heritage as a living bridge between civilizations. Yet the Alhambra is not merely a monument of the past; it constitutes powerful material evidence of the deep historical relationship between the Arab-Islamic world and Spain.

The Alhambra, whose name literally means “the red one” (from the Arabic al-Ḥamrāʾ), stands on Sabika Hill as a silent witness to nearly three centuries of the final period of Islamic rule in al-Andalus. Built and developed primarily under the Nasrid Dynasty, this palace-city complex reflects the synergy of science, art, and resource management inherited from the Arab-Islamic tradition. The historical relationship between Arabs and Spain extended beyond conquest and governance to encompass the transfer of technical knowledge, agriculture, literature, and architecture that helped shape Iberian civilization.

In the context of contemporary geopolitics marked by uncertainty, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has distinguished himself among European leaders by firmly opposing involvement in the military conflict between the United States and Iran. This policy carries significant implications for the security of the Arab Gulf region and for humanity more broadly. Such a stance is not without historical foundation. It rests upon the long-standing relationship between the Arab-Islamic world and the Kingdom of Spain, forged over centuries. The strength of that relationship is embodied in shared cultural heritage, foremost among which is the Alhambra—a monument that serves as material evidence of interaction, mutual contribution, and civilizational continuity.

Ironically, while the Spanish leadership demonstrates political courage grounded in historical awareness, Andalusian heritage is often still treated passively by the Arab-Islamic side. The preservation of the Alhambra through genuine cross-cultural cooperation—rather than mere apologetic rhetoric—is therefore of the utmost importance if this shared heritage is to be perpetuated. Concrete measures of this kind can affirm that dialogue and respect for history are capable of serving as a bridge that eases global tensions, transforming a heritage previously used only as an argument into a source of inspiration and productive cooperation.

2. Historical Context: The Nasrid Dynasty and the Construction of the Alhambra.

The Nasrid Dynasty was founded by Muhammad I ibn al-Aḥmar (r. 1232–1273) at a time when al-Andalus was rapidly contracting under pressure from the advancing Christian kingdoms. Granada became the last stronghold of Islam on the Iberian Peninsula. According to the chronicle of the historian Ibn ʿIdhārī al-Marrākushī, in 1238 Muhammad I surveyed the site of Sabika Hill, marked the foundations of the fortress, and immediately ordered the construction of a water-supply system. He “brought water from the river, built a dam (azud), and excavated an exclusive channel for that purpose.” This strategic decision was not merely military; it was a civilizational act that transformed the Alhambra from a defensive fortress into a self-sufficient and functional madīnah (palace-city).

The complex that developed gradually contained a mosque, baths (ḥammām), residences for officials and servants, workshops, an internal market, and other public facilities. Estimated to house approximately 2,000 inhabitants, the Alhambra functioned as a center of government, the residence of the dynasty, a symbol of power, and a locus of cultural production and consumption. Under the successors of Muhammad I—particularly Muhammad II, Yūsuf I, and, at its zenith, Muhammad V (r. 1354–1359 and 1362–1391)—the Alhambra underwent substantial expansion. The Court of the Lions (Patio de los Leones), the Hall of the Two Sisters (Sala de las Dos Hermanas), and numerous other magnificent spaces were constructed, rendering the complex a masterpiece of Islamic architecture that integrated practical function, artistic beauty, and spiritual symbolism.

More than a palace, Nasrid Granada became an intellectual and scientific center that continued the golden tradition of al-Andalus. Although its territory had diminished, the kingdom remained a refuge for scholars, physicians, astronomers, mathematicians, and men of letters. The Yūsufiyya Madrasa, established in the fourteenth century, served as an important educational institution. The sultans, especially Muhammad II, extended protection to scientists.

Among the prominent figures active in and around the palace and the city of Granada were:

• Lisān al-Dīn Ibn al-Khaṭīb (1313–1374), the greatest polymath of Nasrid Granada. He served as vizier, historian, physician, and poet. His work al-Iḥāṭa fī akhbār Gharnāṭa remains the principal source for the history of Granada. In medicine he wrote on the plague and remarkably advanced the concept of contagion centuries before modern germ theory. His poetry adorns the walls of the Alhambra. His historiographical and medical works continue to be important references.
• Ibn al-Raqqām (d. 1315), an astronomer, mathematician, and physician brought to Granada and protected by Muhammad II. He compiled astronomical tables, developed the theory of gnomonics, and constructed astronomical instruments. His contributions to practical astronomy reflect the continuity of the Andalusian scientific tradition that had earlier influenced Europe through Latin translations.
• Other figures such as Ibn Hudhayl, al-Shaqūrī, and Muḥammad al-Shafra in medicine and pharmacy, as well as Ibn Luyūn in agronomy, further enriched the scientific life of Granada. The literary tradition reached its height with Ibn Zamrak, whose poems are also inscribed in the Alhambra.

The intellectual environment surrounding the Alhambra was not an isolated phenomenon. It constituted a continuation of the scientific tradition of al-Andalus that had earlier produced such figures as Ibn Rushd (Averroes), Ibn Zuhr, and al-Zarqālī, whose works in philosophy, medicine, and astronomy became models for medieval Europe and influenced the development of modern science. In Nasrid Granada the same spirit—observation, rationality, and the integration of knowledge with art—persisted even under political pressure.

The Alhambra was thus not only a political fortress but a symbol of a civilization that combined advanced hydraulic engineering, breathtaking architecture, refined literature, and productive scientific life. Until the surrender of Granada to the Catholic Monarchs in 1492, the complex stood as the final witness to the intellectual and cultural achievement of Arab-Islamic civilization on the Iberian Peninsula—a legacy that continues to influence the contemporary world.

3. The Acequia Real: Evidence of the Excellence of Arab-Islamic Hydraulic Engineering.

The existence of the Alhambra would have been impossible without a sophisticated water system. The Acequia Real (Royal Canal or Saqiyat al-Sulṭān), however, was far more than a supply channel for the palace. It was a masterpiece of hydraulic engineering that simultaneously underpinned the food security and sustainability of the entire Nasrid kingdom. This system demonstrates that the Alhambra is not merely a lesson in architecture but a living laboratory for the development of modern irrigation and the concept of food security that remains relevant today.

In the thirteenth century, Muhammad I ordered water to be drawn from the River Darro near Jesús del Valle, approximately 6–6.1 kilometres upstream, at an elevation of about 838 metres above sea level. Through a channel with a minimally precise gradient (approximately 2–3 per mille), water was conveyed by gravity via tunnels cut into the hillside, aqueducts, and surface channels along the Cerro del Sol. This carefully calculated gradient—designed so that the water “walks but does not run”—prevented erosion while preserving water quality, a principle that remains a reference in modern irrigation engineering.

The system branched ingeniously. The Acequia del Tercio supplied the Generalife—an almunia (palace estate) that served the dual function of summer retreat for the sultans and strategically productive agricultural land. At the Generalife, water was used not only for aesthetic purposes but to irrigate terraced gardens that produced food for the palace and the population.

Vegetables, fruits, and plants systematically introduced or developed by Islamic civilization were cultivated there, including spinach, artichokes, watermelon, pomegranates, peaches, and almonds. The Colorada, Grande, Fuentepeña, and Mercería gardens functioned as granaries that reduced the kingdom’s dependence on external supplies. This represented a concrete realization of food security: the integrated management of water and land enabling the kingdom to meet its basic needs amid political and geographical pressures.

The main branch of the Acequia Real entered the walls of the Alhambra and was distributed through a network of ceramic pipes (atanores), storage tanks (aljibe), small sluice gates, and secondary channels. Water flowed to the baths (ḥammām), reflecting pools, fountains, officials’ residences, and public facilities. Every drop was regulated with precision so that it reached every part of the palace-city without waste. In the second half of the fourteenth century, under Muhammad V, the Acequia de los Arquillos was extended to supply higher-elevation plantations on the Cerro del Sol. Techniques for elevating water—using noria (animal-powered water wheels) and inverted qanāt systems—demonstrated mastery of hydraulic science that combined Persian, Roman, and Arab-Islamic innovations.

In the Court of the Lions (constructed by Muhammad V around 1362–1391), water reached the peak of its integration as an aesthetic, symbolic, and technical element simultaneously. Twelve marble lions support a basin adorned with a poem by Ibn Zamrak that describes the play of flowing and still water, so that “we do not know which is moving.” This integration of architecture, calligraphy, and hydraulics reflects the concept of paradise (jannah) in the Islamic tradition realized in material form. Behind the beauty, however, lies a deeper message: the same water that creates visual wonder also sustains daily life and the kingdom’s food security.

The Acequia Real thus teaches that a high civilization is measured not only by the beauty of its buildings but by its capacity to manage natural resources intelligently and sustainably. The irrigation system constructed by Nasrid engineers became a precursor of the principles of modern irrigation: the use of gravity, tiered distribution, reserve storage, and the integration of aesthetic, domestic, and productive needs. Through the Acequia Real, the Alhambra stands as evidence that Arab-Islamic hydraulic engineering was capable of securing food for an entire kingdom—a lesson of enduring relevance in a world facing global water and food challenges.

4. The Alhambra as Evidence of the Historical Arab-Spanish Relationship.

The Alhambra is not a “foreign” relic on Spanish soil. It is the product of a long, deep, and mutually enriching interaction between the Arab-Islamic world and Iberian society. From the eighth century, when Muslim forces crossed the Strait of Gibraltar, al-Andalus developed into one of the most brilliant centres of civilization in medieval Europe. A massive transfer of knowledge took place: mathematics (including algebra and algorithms), astronomy, medicine, philosophy, agriculture, and engineering. Cities such as Córdoba, Seville, Toledo, and later Granada became meeting places of Greek, Persian, Indian, and Arab traditions that were subsequently transmitted to Christian Europe through Latin translations. The Nasrid irrigation system at the Alhambra continued and refined earlier practices of the Zirid, Almoravid, and Almohad periods, demonstrating the continuity of technical innovation rooted in Arab-Islamic knowledge.

This relationship was not solely intellectual; it was also social and cultural. For centuries Muslims, Christians, and Jews lived side by side in varying degrees of tolerance and cooperation, creating what later came to be called convivencia. Although marked by political tensions, the period left an indelible legacy: a Spanish language rich in Arabic vocabulary, Mudéjar architecture, advanced agriculture, and a scientific tradition that became a foundation of the European Renaissance.

After the surrender of Granada in 1492, the Catholic Monarchs recognized the excellence of the Nasrid hydraulic system and architecture. They did not destroy it but ordered its maintenance and further utilization. This continuity constituted a practical acknowledgment of shared heritage. In subsequent centuries the Alhambra underwent successive restorations and reinterpretations—from the Romantic period to modern conservation—yet the core of its technique and aesthetics was preserved. Its inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984 (together with the Generalife and the Albayzín) affirms its value as the heritage of humankind rather than the property of a single nation or religion.

It is this underlying history of the Arab-Islamic and Spanish relationship that is reflected in the political courage of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. Amid geopolitical turmoil involving the United States and Iran, Sánchez has stood out as a European leader who has firmly refused involvement in war, defended sovereignty, and called for dialogue and respect for international law. His stance did not arise in a vacuum; it rests upon historical awareness that Spain and the Arab-Islamic world share a deeply intertwined past—a past materially embodied in the Alhambra.

This political courage should serve as a lesson for Arab leaders. Rather than treating Andalusian heritage merely as an apologetic argument or an instrument of image-building, Arab leaders may emulate an approach grounded in mature historical awareness: making shared heritage the foundation for dialogue, rejecting the escalation of conflict, and promoting cooperation that eases tensions.

The Alhambra teaches that high civilization is born of interaction rather than isolation; of intelligent resource management rather than domination; and of the capacity to safeguard shared heritage amid the changes of time. In the face of present geopolitical turmoil, the lessons of the historical Arab-Spanish relationship—embodied in the Alhambra and reflected in contemporary Spanish political attitudes—remain highly relevant: true strength lies in the courage to choose peace, dialogue, and the preservation of shared heritage for a more stable future.

5. Contemporary Preservation, Funding Needs, and the Urgency of Cooperation.

The Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife and the Junta de Andalucía currently undertake various sustained and professional conservation efforts. These include the restoration of the roofs of the Nasrid palaces (approximately €2.04 million for the Mexuar and Palacios Nazaríes stages), the restoration of decorative elements in the Court of the Lions (approximately €1.16 million), the rehabilitation of gardens and orchards, structural monitoring with sensors and AI-based digital twins, and the maintenance of the historic Acequia Real water network. The overall annual budget of the Patronato reaches approximately €48 million (2026), with allocations for conservation and rehabilitation investment ranging from €6 to €11.8 million for various interventions.

Nevertheless, existing efforts remain limited to routine maintenance and gradual restoration. Elevating the Alhambra as a living symbol of the authentic Arab-Spanish relationship requires more ambitious and integrated programmes: the comprehensive recovery of the Acequia Real hydraulic system and all its branches, intensive rehabilitation of the Generalife as a model of historical food security, integrated conservation of the Nasrid palaces, in-depth scientific documentation, and the development of interpretation and education centres involving younger generations from both Arab countries and Spain.

Cooperation between the Kingdom of Spain and wealthy Arab states constitutes the core implementation of the ideas advanced in this paper. Such cooperation requires two principal prerequisites: a deep awareness of the value of the shared cultural heritage, and the availability of funding. The sum required for a comprehensive restoration and revitalisation programme over the medium term (several years) may be projected in the range of tens of millions to possibly hundreds of millions of euros—figures that appear substantial from the perspective of ordinary cultural budgets.

Yet however great the cost of comprehensively restoring the Alhambra may be, that sum will not strain the resources of the Arab countries. By comparison, the giga-projects under Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 (including NEOM and The Line) have been announced with values of hundreds of billions of US dollars; actual expenditures already underway amount to tens of billions, with overall projections far larger. Similar projects in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar involve investments of comparable or greater scale for infrastructure, tourist destinations, and the development of future cities. Even the cost of a single year of armed conflict in various regions far exceeds the total budget required to restore and revitalise the Alhambra comprehensively.

In this context, the allocation of funds for the preservation of the Alhambra is not an economic burden but a highly efficient and high-impact symbolic, cultural, and diplomatic investment. With mature cultural awareness and proportional financial support, such cooperation may encompass:

• joint research on the hydraulic system and landscape archaeology;
• restoration that combines traditional Arab-Islamic knowledge with modern conservation standards;
• educational programmes and youth exchanges that position the Alhambra as a shared learning space;
• the development of interpretation that presents the Alhambra firmly as a bridge between civilizations rather than merely a tourist attraction or an apologetic argument.

Amid uncertain geopolitical conditions—regional tensions, identity polarisation, and global climate challenges—concrete cooperation of this kind carries profound strategic significance. It not only strengthens the physical preservation of the monument but also eases the international atmosphere by affirming that Arab-Spanish history is a narrative of shared contribution, dialogue, and a heritage that must be safeguarded jointly.

This constitutes the concrete implementation of the historical awareness that has often remained mere rhetoric: transforming the Alhambra from a monument invoked as an argument into a living, productive, and calming space of cooperation for present and future generations of humanity.

6. Conclusion.

The Alhambra, with the Acequia Real as its lifeblood, constitutes clear material evidence of the profound historical relationship between the Arab-Islamic world and Spain. The water system that travels kilometres from the River Darro, the productive gardens of the Generalife that underpinned food security, and the integration of art, technology, and science within its palaces demonstrate the high level of civilization achieved through interaction, dialogue, and cultural cooperation rather than through confrontation.

Preserving and restoring this heritage through genuine cooperation between the Kingdom of Spain and Arab countries requires deep awareness of its cultural value as well as the availability of funding. The costs involved—though not negligible—are far smaller than those of armed conflict or the landmark projects of the Gulf region. However large the investment required for the comprehensive restoration of the Alhambra, it will not strain the resources of the wealthy Arab states.

More than a scientific and cultural obligation, this step constitutes a calming diplomatic initiative amid geopolitical uncertainty. The Alhambra teaches that civilizational heritage can serve as a bridge rather than a dividing wall.

The Arab-Islamic world—including Iran and Indonesia—should therefore regard civilizational legacies such as the Alhambra as a pathway toward a life of peace, mutual understanding, and freedom from hostility and destructive rivalry. Rather than being used merely as apologetic arguments or instruments of image-building, this heritage must be revitalised as a source of inspiration for dialogue, the rejection of conflict escalation, and the strengthening of cross-national cooperation.

In this way the Alhambra will not only continue to stand as a beautiful monument in Granada but will become a living symbol that the highest form of civilization is that which chooses peace, safeguards shared heritage, and opens the way for future generations to live in harmony.
