Building Humane Cities: From the UN-Habitat Global Dialogue to Real-World Humanistic Housing at Summarecon Serpong<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amid the growing complexities of urbanization, UN-Habitat is once again opening a strategic space for dialogue. Through an official invitation, the organization is calling on stakeholders, partners, and friends around the world to join the Third Global Stakeholder Dialogue with the UN-Habitat Executive Director. The virtual meeting will take place on Tuesday, 11 August 2026, from 14:30 to 16:00 EAT (Nairobi).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is no ordinary gathering. It represents an important moment to strengthen collaboration in implementing the Strategic Plan 2026\u20132029, align shared priorities for the next 12 months, and further develop UN-Habitat\u2019s Stakeholder Engagement Roadmap and Guidelines. The foundation is clear: the outcomes of WUF13, the Baku Call to Action, and the mid-term review of the New Urban Agenda. Local, regional, and constituency perspectives must genuinely shape global urban policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an Indonesian educational foundation holding Special Consultative Status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) since 2013, Yayasan Pendidikan Indonesia (YPI) sees this dialogue as a golden opportunity. Education does not only take place in classrooms. True education also emerges from humane living environments\u2014spaces that shape character, health, community, and hope for future generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Is Humanistic Housing?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Humanistic housing places people at the centre of planning. It is not merely about physical buildings, but about creating an ecosystem that supports a complete quality of life: access to education, green spaces, safety, connectivity, environmental sustainability, and a sense of community belonging. This concept aligns closely with the spirit of the New Urban Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals that we consistently advocate in United Nations forums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Indonesia, one real-world example that deserves attention is the development of Summarecon Serpong in the Gading Serpong area of Tangerang. Developed by PT Summarecon Agung Tbk on approximately 850 hectares of land, the area has grown into an integrated township that brings together residential, commercial, educational, healthcare, recreational, and public spaces within a single living ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 12,000 houses, around 6,000 apartment units, thousands of land plots, and shophouses have already been built. Four main zones\u2014Pondok Hijau Golf, The Springs, Scientia Garden, and Symphonia\u2014each offer a distinct character while remaining interconnected. Facilities are comprehensive: Summarecon Mall Serpong, a golf course, The Springs Club, SQP Park, a hospital, and educational institutions ranging from schools to Universitas Pradita and Universitas Multimedia Nusantara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What makes it special is the approach of \u201ccreating living spaces across generations.\u201d Albert Luhur, Executive Director of Summarecon Serpong, has emphasized that development is not simply about constructing properties, but about building environments that can evolve over time through careful planning, functional integration, and strong connectivity. Expansive green spaces, lakes (including Harmony Lake, Grisea Lake, Melody Lake, and Symphonia Urban Lake Park), pedestrian pathways, and a firm commitment to a pleasant natural environment form the backbone of the liveable city and smart & green environment concepts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Scientia Garden, the tagline \u201cSmart and Green Environment\u201d is realized through the integration of education, business, and open spaces. In The Springs, \u201cThe Harmony of Healthy Living\u201d features contoured landscapes and lakes that support a healthy lifestyle. Newer residential products such as Bellefont (French classic style), Ardea (modern premium with smart-home features), Louise (American classic resort feel), and Finore demonstrate ongoing efforts to adapt designs to the needs of modern families\u2014privacy, comfort, natural lighting, air circulation, and spatial efficiency\u2014without compromising ecological values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This mixed-use approach reduces the need for long-distance travel, lowers emissions, and improves time efficiency. Residents can live, learn, work, exercise, and do business within a convenient radius. This is the essence of humanistic housing: a city that serves people, not the other way around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Is This Relevant to the UN-Habitat Dialogue?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The experience of Summarecon Serpong offers valuable lessons for global discussions. It shows how local Indonesian perspectives\u2014facing challenges of density, the need for quality education, and environmental pressures\u2014can be transformed into a sustainable model. Strictly protected green spaces, environmental management, and a focus on intergenerational quality of life align closely with the aspirations of UN-Habitat\u2019s Strategic Plan 2026\u20132029.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a stakeholder with Special Consultative Status at ECOSOC, YPI encourages practices like these to be documented, shared, and strengthened in stakeholder forums. Education and humanistic housing are two sides of the same coin: both shape people who are healthy, empowered, and caring toward others and the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
